Workshop on Protecting Iraqi Cultural Heritage and Fighting Terrorism
On 30 and 31 May 2018, SatCen participated in the Workshop on Protecting Iraqi Cultural Heritage and Fighting Terrorism organised by the Technical Assistance and Information Exchange Instrument of the European Commission in cooperation with the Federal Government of Iraq and the Office of the EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator.
The aim of the Workshop was to bring together experts in customs and law enforcement, prosecutors, archaeologists, representatives of Iraqi authorities, European Union institutions and international organisations, and explore ways to prevent the illegal trafficking and destruction of Iraqi cultural heritage. Among the topics discussed are relevant legislation and conventions, synergies between national authorities, the combatting of terrorist financing and cooperation with third countries. The discussions were supported by a presentation by the SatCen Head of Operations and an Imagery Analyst: ‘Monitoring of Archaeological Sites by EU SatCen: Using Space Assets to implement the EU Global Strategy’.
This activity is organised in follow-up to the TAIEX-PI Workshop on National and International Criminal Justice, held in October 2017 in partnership with Iraq. It is also part of the European Union's efforts to develop stronger ties with third countries and to encourage intercultural dialogue, post-conflict reconciliation and conflict prevention during the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018.
