Visit of H.E. the President of the European Council

On 30 June 2022, the SatCen Director, Ambassador Sorin Ducaru, had the honour to welcome H.E. Charles Michel, the President of the European Council, for a visit to the EU Satellite Centre. The Director provided a short introduction to the mission and activities of the Centre, focusing on SatCen's role for CFSP/CSDP and beyond.

In the following, the SatCen Head of Operations, Mr Alvaro Rodriguez, briefed on the analysis priorities in the current security environment and the specific benefits the Centre's Geospatial intelligence services provided to the EU and its Member States.

In this context, several experts presented their analysis work in interactive sessions at their workstations, briefing on various examples of current crisis support, situational awareness, contingency planning and support to external action including for missions and operations.

The Head of Information Technology, Mr Alexis Letulier, then provided an overview of the IT tools and various technological activities supporting and enabling the Centre's mission, with a special focus on Big Data and Artificial Intelligence applications used in the analysis process.

In the subsequent discussions, the President inquired about how the SatCen analysis could provide further support to his work on the political level, and what specific analysis products and services would be available for this purpose. Director Ducaru commented on SatCen's special role in strengthening strategic autonomy as a pillar of the EU level of ambition in security and defence.

President Michel thanked the Centre and its Director for the valuable work and professional support in view of the ongoing challenges to the EU´s security environment, appreciating the informative visit and the dedicated effort of all staff to fulfil the unique SatCen mission.
