Visit of H.E. Klaus Iohannis, President of Romania, to SatCen

Today's visit at SatCen was an interesting experience. Your achievements are impressive – your valuable, reliable analysis of satellite data is helping the European Union and its Member States to better face the current security challenges, especially in these difficult times” – Klaus Werner Iohannis, President of Romania during his visit to SatCen

On 30 June 2022, SatCen had the distinct honour of receiving H.E. Klaus Werner Iohannis, President of Romania, at the Centre’s headquarters in Torrejon de Ardoz. The visit comes against the backdrop of the NATO Summit which took place in Madrid in late June (28th-30th), and in light of Europe’s current security context.

The visit to SatCen provided an opportunity to discuss the diverse activities of the Centre and highlight the specific projects of interest to Romania. SatCen Director, Sorin Ducaru, briefed the President of Romania on the mission and activities of the Centre, focusing on SatCen's role for CFSP/CSDP and beyond. SatCen’s unique role in Space Surveillance and Tracking – SST was also discussed.

On the occasion of his visit, the President received specialized briefings from SatCen analysts at their workstations. The interactive briefings provided an overview of the added value provided by SatCen in key areas such as current crisis support, situational awareness, as well as climate change impact analysis.

The operational sessions were complemented with an overview of the IT tools and technologies developed in-house, supporting and enabling the Centre's mission, with a special focus on Big Data and Artificial Intelligence applications used in the analysis process.

President Iohannis expressed appreciation for the substantial contribution of the Satellite Center in what concerns the support to the EU’s security and strategic autonomy, and for supporting Member States in managing current security challenges. He also congratulated the Centre for its 30 years of operational activity.

In addition to the briefings, President Iohannis met the Romanian members of the EU SatCen team, with whom he had a brief exchange of views and whom he congratulated for their contribution to the Centre's activity.

This is the first time in SatCen’s history that a current Head of State visits the organization, underlining the increased ambitions and efforts of the European Union in the security, defence and space domains, as well as reinforcing Romania’s longstanding support as a partner and utilizer of SatCen services.
