The Colegio Oficial de Físicos visits SatCen
On 24 September 2021, SatCen opened its doors for the Colegio Oficial de Físicos (Spanish Professional Association of Physicists). The group was welcomed by Deputy Director Louis Tillier, along with a team of specialized experts.
The objective of the visit was two-fold, on one hand, to promote professional science trajectories in the field of Security and Defence, and on the other, to highlight the work and importance of physicists in the industry. In this context, the group was briefed by three SatCen staff, physicists by profession, on their work at the Centre and their professional paths.
Mr Enrique Coiras, Training Instructor, provided a general introduction to SatCen’s activities, highlighting the Centre’s main analysis domains and the need for products to adapt to both user needs, as well as nature of the crises. Mr Coiras introduced satellite capabilities and discussed the benefits and shortcomings of different types of imagery. A deep-dive on SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) was provided to the group, introducing the benefits of SAR, the use of Electro-Magnetic Spectrum and the various uses of radar.
Mr Raúl Alonso, Geospatial Software Application Developer, discussed the digital processing of satellite imagery providing various examples of Band compositions, image re-alignments, and fusions among other specialized topics.
Furthermore, Mr Javier Ramirez, DevSecOps Officer, introduced the use of software containers as methods of providing an easy way of executing compute processes using virtualized environments. Mr Ramirez discussed the key features of software containers, their use and benefits, highlighting their application to science.
The course was delighted to learn from professionals in the industry and were keen to learn more about the Centre’s operations and use of physics for operational and IT tasks.
