Spanish Foreign and Defence Ministries visit SatCen on 22 September
On 22 September 2020, Sra. Dña. Elena Gómez Castro, Directora General de Política de Defensa, Ministerio de Defensa, and Sr. Fidel Sendagorta Gómez del Campillo, Director General de Política Exterior y de Seguridad, Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores, Unión Europea y Cooperación, both representing the Spanish host nation, visited SatCen.
The delegation was received by the SatCen Director, Ambassador Sorin Ducaru, and the Deputy Director, Giuseppe D’Amico, as well as by staff from the Centre.
Director Ducaru presented the agencies´s unique operational capabilities in the field of space and security and especially SatCen´s current engagement for key EU activities. This includes support to the EU´s naval Operation EUNAVFOR MED Irini, to current OSCE and UN peace efforts as specifically mandated by the EU, and services provided through the Copernicus Service in Support to EU External Action (SEA), as well as support to Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, and as front-desk for the SST Consortium.
The Director and his team also presented a vision on SatCen’s future development in line with the constantly growing user demand and the rapid technological evolution.
Spain has been the SatCen´s host nation since the agency´s establishment in 1992, originally as an entity of the Western European Union (WEU), and has provided its support for the successful development into the current Centre with its specific operational mission. To prepare for future challenges, Spain is also supporting the extension of the Centre´s building, as approved by the EU Member States, with construction to begin in the coming months.
