SatCen presents Big Data & AI Projects at EC workshop 19-20 Nov
SatCen presented three projects, funded under the Horizon 2020 Space Programme, during the workshop “Big Data and Artificial Intelligence for Earth Observation (EO)”, organized by the European Commission on 19-20 November 2020.
During the workshop the results of BETTER, which is due to end soon, were presented and two starting projects, GEM and CALLISTO, were introduced.
BETTER (Big-data Earth observation Technology and Tools Enhancing Research and development) implemented an EO Big Data intermediate service layer devoted to harnessing the potential of the Sentinel European EO data directly from the needs of the users. SatCen was responsible for enhancing the capabilities of the Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) community in the Space and Security domain through the provision of improved EO products and applications exploiting Big Data methods and techniques.
GEM (Global Earth Monitor) will address the challenge of continuous monitoring of large areas using different data sources and the support of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data technologies. SatCen will explore the Climate-Security nexus, correlating global climate changes and environmental issues with human activity behaviours, with the ultimate goal to improve the safety and security of citizens.
CALLISTO (Copernicus AI Services and data fusion with other distributed data sources and processing at the edge to support DIAS and HPC infrastructures) will develop dedicated AI solutions which, by combining data from heterogeneous sources, will help monitor the human and the environmental activity to support sustainable development. SatCen is responsible for the definition of the land border monitoring use case, leveraging Sentinel data sources for supporting operational GEOINT tasks.
