SatCen discusses "New Scenarios Shaping a Digital Twin Earth for Security" at IGARSS 2022
On 20th July 2022, SatCen chaired a session at the International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS) 2022. IGARSS is the flagship conference of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) and it aimed at providing a platform for sharing knowledge and experience on recent developments and advancements in geoscience and remote sensing technologies, particularly in the context of Earth Observation (EO), disaster monitoring and risk assessment.
Sergio Albani, Head of SatCen RTDI Unit, co-chaired a virtual session entitled “Addressing New Security scenarios with Big EO data” together with Professor Peter Baumann from Jacobs University. The session started with Sergio Albani's introduction aimed at explaining how EO, collateral data and innovative technologies can help the understanding of the so-called New Security. With the New Security concept, the paradigm of Security as isolated domain changes to a complex, inter-domain one: this is evident in topics such as Climate Security (e.g. how climate-related events amplify existing risks for society, endangering the security of humans, key infrastructures, economy or ecosystems).
The presentation slots started with the SatCen contribution to New Security and Digital Twins with the presentation of Michele Lazzarini, RTDI Project Manager, entitled “New Scenarios shaping a Digital Twin Earth for Security”. The session continued with the presentation of Peter Baumann, displaying the Cube4EnvSec initiative, followed by the presentation of Dario Augusto Borges Oliveira on the use of autoencoders for extreme weather events, and it ended with the presentation of Chen-Yu Hao on the Taiwan National Federated Raster Data Repository.
The session was closed with Peter Baumann's remarks on the topics presented during the session, highlighting the technological aspects of Big Geospatial Datacubes and Cloud Computing.
