SatCen Director Sorin Ducaru addresses the European Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy Committee
On Monday 31 May 2021, SatCen Director Sorin Ducaru presented a comprehensive video-briefing on SatCen’s current and future activities to the European Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) Committee. The address comes as a consequence of a meeting with Cristian Busoi, Chair of the European Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) Committee, in mid-February, where Ambassador Ducaru discussed the Centre’s relevance for ITRE’s agenda and the subsequent invitation to brief the ITRE Committee.
During the video call, the Industry, Research and Energy Committee was briefed on the role of SatCen as an autonomous European asset for geospatial intelligence, highlighting in detail the Centre’s successful cooperation with the Commission and providing illustrations on its core business.
In addition, Ambassador Ducaru discussed the Centre’s role in the development and employment of innovative technologies to support geospatial analysis and SatCen’s role as an entrusted entity for the Copernicus Support for External Action Service and the Agency’s role as “Front Desk” service provider within the EU Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST) Support Framework. In this regard, Amb. Ducaru discussed the Centre’s readiness for continued activity and growth, emphasizing the importance of having an autonomous European Union entity to monitor the skies and provide fast and reliable analysis across the whole spectrum from political planning to operational decision making.
The address to the European Parliament’s ITRE Committee concluded with an expression of appreciation and support for the Centre’s work, contributions and expertise. Moreover, Cristian Busoi, Chair of the ITRE Committee, stated: “SatCen makes an important contribution to our defence capacity. We will continue to give political and policy support to the Space Programme in general and to all the institutions related to that”.
