Lieutenant General Luis Manuel Martínez Meijide, Chief of the Spanish Military Emergency Unit, visits SatCen
On 7 July 2020 a delegation from the Spanish Military Emergency Unit (UME) headed by Lieutenant General Luis Manuel Martínez Meijide, Head of UME, visited SatCen and were briefed on the Centre's activities.
They were welcomed by SatCen Director Amb. Sorin Ducaru, Deputy Director Giuseppe D’Amico and other SatCen Managers.
Amb. Sorin Ducaru and Mr Giuseppe D’Amico gave an introduction to SatCen and its activities, whereafter Deputy Operations Manager Alvaro Rodríguez gave an in-depth presentation on operational activities, giving examples of products related to migration activity, support to contingency planning in case of floods and others for the case of the break of a dam. He also explained the evolution of satellite imagery, going from a resolution over 10m to the current one of under 0.5m.
Furthermore, he stressed the importance of integration, customization and development of tools for the analysis of satellite imagery showing how artificial intelligence eases the work of the analyst by scanning huge areas to detect objects of interests. This has been used amongst other examples to support the European Fisheries and Control Agency in the detection of illegal tuna farming.
Thereafter, the delegation was led to the Operations Division where imagery analysts showed examples of SatCen products, such as SatCen support to EUNAVFOR MED Operation IRINI, and SatCen support to the OSCE in relation to the fires near Chernobyl.
Lieutenant General Luis Manuel Martínez Meijide said his attention had been caught especially by the example of the breaking of the dam and the possibilities of the technical analysis showing how the terrain would be affected.
The visit ended with an exchange of gifts, and both the SatCen Director and the Head of UME expressed their gratitude for this fruitful exchange.
