On 10 February 2021, SatCen was delighted to welcome H.E Mr. Riccardo Guariglia, Ambassador of Italy to Spain, together with a diplomatic delegation. Director Sorin Ducaru and Deputy Director Giuseppe D’Amico welcomed the dignitaries along with a SatCen team of experts.
This first visit to SatCen of Ambassador Guariglia provided the opportunity for a first hand presentation of the capabilities and operational activity of the Agency. Ambassador Guariglia showed great interest in the various areas of work and initiatives pursued by the Centre. SatCen expert staff presented the Centre’s geospatial analysis support to the European External Action Service, to EU Missions and Operations, to Member States as well as to the United Nations (UN) and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). SatCen’s Role’s role in the EU Copernicus Programme, as well as the “Front Desk” service provider role within EU Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST) Support Framework have also been presented.
Specific focus was placed on how SatCen activities support Member States, and how the Centre’s “culture of innovation” foments newly developed IT and AI tools as well as continuous exploration and implementation of cutting-edge technologies.
H.E. Ambassador Guariglia expressed high appreciation for the activities performed by the Centre, stating, “It is a great honour for me to visit this outstanding Centre of Excellence – Congratulations for the work done with enthusiasm and passion by all the staff”.
The visit concluded with a brief tour of the Centre’s Operations Divisions, and a meeting with SatCen’s Italian staff members.
The visit has underscored Italy’s consistent role as an important supporter of and contributor to SatCen activity and development objectives in line with the growing EU level of ambition in the security, defence and space domains and growing user demand of providing reliable and autonomous geospatial analysis for effective decision-making and action.
