“Digital Twin Earth for Security” Virtual Φ-week Side Event Organised by SatCen

The SatCen RTDI unit is organising the side event “Digital Twin Earth for Security” on 2 October from 9.30 to 11.00 within the ESA Φ-week (which this year will take place as a virtual event).

To understand security in all its complexity, the interconnection between different domains has to be thoroughly analyzed. In recent years, we observed a number of scenarios in which civil security had been affected by events of different nature. Serious events have occurred in various parts of the globe, like migration induced by weather conditions, humanitarian problems caused by water scarcity and food insecurity, or governments forced to take extraordinary measures to preserve the life and well-being of its population due to the spread of viruses.

The “Digital Twin Earth for Security” side event aims to provide the foundation for an interactive model of the earth, reflecting physical aspects of our planet with an impact on the safety and security of citizens. The session will focus on needs and solutions to properly integrate data from heterogeneous sources (e.g. earth observation satellites and new platforms, Open Source Intelligence, in-situ measurements) with state-of-the-art analytical techniques and innovative technologies (e.g. Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, interoperable platforms like GEO-DAMP), with the final objective of addressing societal challenges relevant from a security perspective.

Representatives from EU & international entities, industry and academia will present relevant activities and their views on the topic.

You find more information on the event on the ESA Φ-week website ( and can watch the introductory video on the SatCen youtube channel (
