The European - Security and Defence Union
SatCen is featured in the latest edition of “The European”, a key magazine for European security and defence policy. The Centre is prominently presented in this article with its strategic mission of supporting EU external action through tailored geospatial intelligence analysis, strengthening collective decision making in CFSP / CSDP as well as EU missions and operations.
The magazine addresses the European security community as well as a wide audience interested in European citizenship, security and defence matters and international politics.
Key aspects highlighted in the text are the recent Board meeting on Ministerial level in May – placing the Centre visibly into political orbit – as well as the visit of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission (HR/VP), Josep Borrell, to the SatCen premises in February 2020.
The article explains the Centre's contribution to the forthcoming Strategic Compass, its mission to support EU crisis management through a broad range of geospatial analysis services, and its involvement in the general development of space and security, including its Front Desk function for the EU Space Surveillance and Tracking Support Framework (EU SST). This activity, in close cooperation with EU Member States, provides security in space, complementing the main geospatial intelligence mission of providing security from space.
With nearly 3 decades of operational service, SatCen will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2022.
