H.E. Slovenian Ambassador Robert Krmelj visits SatCen
On 19 January 2022, SatCen was delighted to welcome H.E Mr Robert Krmelj, Ambassador of Slovenia to Spain. His Excellency was welcomed by Director Sorin Ducaru, Deputy Director Louis Tillier along with a team of SatCen experts.
This first visit to SatCen provided the opportunity for a first-hand presentation of the mission, value and operational activity of the Agency. Mr Álvaro Rodríguez, Head of Operations, discussed the Centre’s geospatial intelligence techniques, showcasing relevant and recent examples of GEOINT in different fields of activity from irregular migration to support for EU Mission and Operation IRINI. Mr João Alves, Head of SSA/SST Unit complimented the briefing by presenting SatCen’s role as EU SST “Front Desk”, underlining the duality of providing both security from space and in space. In this regard, Mr Alves discussed the current “State of Space” as increasingly congested and contested, highlighting the initiative’s objective of safeguarding European Space Infrastructure in this context.
Specific focus was placed on how SatCen activities support Member States, and how the Centre’s “culture of innovation” foments newly developed IT and AI tools as well as continuous exploration and implementation of cutting-edge technologies.
H.E. Ambassador Krmelj expressed high appreciation for the activities performed by the Centre, stating, “SatCen performs very important tasks in the benefit of the EU and its Member States”.
The visit underscored Slovenia’s consistent role as an important supporter of and contributor to SatCen activity and development objectives in line with the growing EU level of ambition in the security, defence and space domains.
